Now that we are well into the new year – at least 12 days in .The effects of partying, celebrating, and also the rash new year resolution we made have perhaps ebbed away . I thought it may be a good time to have a brave new look at what we want to achieve in the new year and be your best version.
A new version of ourselves
Can we look at upgrading ourselves to just one version above – from where we currently are? For example if I am currently ‘Sanjeev version 2.0 – can I upgrade myself to Sanjeev version 3.0’. What would that look like and what would it take?
Biggest Bang for the Buck
A couple of years ago when I did this exercise for myself I realized that if I could make one change . It would give me the biggest bang for the buck – or in other words the biggest return on my investment of time and effort – or the biggest impact on the most areas of my life.
Well, for me that was losing around 10 kg’s of my body weight. When that was achieved I realized, I felt better, had more energy, had better self-esteem, looked better (at least I thought so), and could wear clothes I had earlier only dreamed about. So the effort was well worth it.
What did I do – well just a few lifestyle changes and I saw my weight gradually dropping away – with a few upturns as well – but over time a general downward trend prevailed. For those who want to know the secret – it was actually no big deal but just a few of the following. Stopped eating (well almost 100%) rice, bread and starch. Started exercising at least 30 minutes a day and many days much more. And tried to limit the overall intake of food in general. Ah yes – one more thing that I picked up from Tim Ferriss, which was start the day with 30 – 50g of protein. And probably the most important which was to purchase a weighing scale. So I would know on a daily basis – just where I stood. ‘What gets measured gets noticed – and done’.
What about you!
So pick what would be the biggest single change you could make that would give you the biggest impact overall in your life . Then make a plan to gradually get where you want to go. Let’s really do this and you will be surprised with where you get to.Remember though, to take tiny steps – but make them consistent – so that you will be able to follow through and not give up till your goal is achieved.
Something else I thought would be great to do – would be to take a quick look back at 2017 and see what I did right .So what I should continue doing; what I wanted to do but didn’t get around to; and finally what I did wrong – what did I learn from this, and how can I prevent doing this in the new year. Just take a sheet of paper – write down the three headings and you are on your way. Again would give us great insights into the year that was past – and help us make an even greater success of the new year.
Small Habits that would be great
Finally something that I am trying to do even better this year is to continue with tiny habits. That could help me be better physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
So some of the things I am planning to do – just to give you some ideas and then you can make your own list are:
Ensure at least 30 minutes of cardio each day. Find exercises that have great benefits which can be done in less time – like the ‘plank’, and the great ‘7 minutes’ workout.
At least 20 minutes a day of prayer or meditation to just quieten my mind and reset it. Really need this to be in more control of my emotions, temper, be more considerate, patient, etc. Actually this one is something that I have tried off and on last year – but without actually making it a consistent practice. Would definitely help in moving me towards my better version.
Broaden my horizons more by trying to read a book a week. Am determined to put my speed reading skills into practice and do this. Also as we went to the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ sale last year and really splurged on books – I need to do this to at least get some of my return.
I think the meditation and prayer and mindfulness and quiet time would be a positive change here as well. I remember the verse from the bible ‘be still and know that I am God’. So want to try to have more stillness in my life. Also to maintain a journal – detailing my plans for the day .More importantly all the things I have going for me – and therefore the things I am supremely grateful for.
Well that’s me. How about you? Would be great if we can get on this journey of upgrading ourselves together and possibly inspire each other along the way. Would love to hear from you on how you are doing and if I could help you in any way I certainly will.
